The Modern Foreign Languages Department is a dedicated team committed to improving student outcomes and
experiences whilst ensuring it provides an engaging and challenging curriculum. It also aims to promote cultural harmony and the importance of languages in today’s national and global society.
Key Stage 3
In Year 7 students are put in mixed ability classes, currently studying either Spanish or French. Students follow a differentiated and inspirational Scheme of Work that is tailored to the students’ interests and needs.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 the vast majority of students are required to study a foreign language for GCSE. We currently have
thirteen Key Stage 4 classes and all students study the Edexcel GCSE Course. Students will be assessed at the end of the course in Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing.
We offer a one week residential excursion to Parc Astérix and Paris with Year 7 and 8. Over the years this has proved to be a successful language learning experience for our students.
We are looking into establishing a Barcelona trip in the near future for students in KS4 as well as a day trip to a Christmas Market in northern France.
The MFL staff work as a team to involve the School in cross-curricular days such as the European Day of Languages,
Bastille Day, and Day of the Dead and encourage students to use language outside the MFL classrooms.
Every room in the Curriculum Area is equipped with an interactive whiteboard and a multimedia projector. Teachers within the Curriculum Area make full use of their laptops, the interactive whiteboard and the internet to develop appropriately all four skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing, both in their lessons and their planning.
