Music

Philosophy

Music at Warblington embraces the philosophy that Music is an integral part of our culture and everyday experience.  It enables students and adults to combine their intellectual, emotional and spiritual natures and to express themselves in a unique and creative way.  Music encourages personal growth, self-discipline and co-operation with others through active involvement in group and personal music-making.  Music at Warblington is great fun!

Curriculum

Key Stage 3

All Key Stage 3 students study Music.  They receive two lessons per fortnight in Years 7 and 8.  Each topic provides
students with the opportunity to develop skills and understanding through the activities of performing, composing, listening and appraising.

Key Stage 4

Music is an option at Key Stage 4.  OCR GCSE Music is offered to students.  It is a very demanding, challenging and
rewarding GCSE, which requires students to perform and compose as part of their coursework and also to sit a
listening exam.  Students are expected to take instrumental lessons during the course either through the school or with a private tutor.  Students do need to be highly organised and well motivated if they are to succeed in this course, a course that is also a lot of fun.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The Curriculum Area is proud of its developing tradition of extra-curricular music-making.  Clubs that currently take place include:  KS3 Band, KS4 Band, Woodwind Ensemble, Singing Ensemble, Keyboard Club, Theory Club.

Peripatetic Music Lessons include:  Brass, Woodwind, Piano/Keyboard, Strings, Guitar, Bass, Drums, Vocals.

All of these clubs are lively and well attended and concentrate on producing high quality music-making, whilst making the activities fun and enjoyable.  There are plenty of performing opportunities throughout the year and we strongly encourage parents to come and support students’ efforts.

Facilities

The Music Studio holds a wide range of instruments and percussion from around the world, drum kits and keyboards with midi recording/playback devices.  We also have computer software, Sibelius and midi keyboards for composing and score writing.

Our Music Studio has two rehearsal rooms for instrumental lessons and band rehearsals.
