Art

Philosophy

Art and Photography have the advantage of being subjects which are enjoyed by the majority of children because of their practical nature.  They can learn and practise a variety of skills and techniques and use a wide range of materials, with an emphasis on personal expression.  Besides teaching the techniques, Art and Photography encourage thinking, creativity and the development of ideas.

Curriculum

Art  is taught to all students in Year 7 and 8.  Art and Photography are offered at examination level, with the
students achieving GCSE results far above the National A* to C percentage grades.

Key Stage 3
Students in KS3 cover all areas of the National Curriculum programme of study.  This involves working on a series of topics, themes and schemes of work, drawing and painting and from observation and looking at other artists and cultures.  3D construction and print making (including Computer Graphics and Photography) are covered.

Key Stage 4

The GCSE courses offered are endorsed and separate Art and Photography GCSEs are available.  Thematic work is the main vehicle for stimulus, with the development of skills/techniques in materials handling.  The courses also place much emphasis on personal study as critical studies has become increasingly more important in Art Education.

Extra-Curricular Activities

The Curriculum Area provides an Art Club two evenings after school where students are encouraged to pursue their own personal ideas, enter outside Art competitions, or to use the extra time on their coursework.

Trips are organised through the year, including visits to London and regional galleries, and sketching trips in the local area.  Photography students have been to the South Bank, The London Eye and on regular visits to Brighton to
establish the landscape aspects of their coursework.

The Curriculum Area is fortunate in having valuable links with local colleges and endeavours to sustain and build on its reputation for providing students with high quality opportunities and experiences.  Warblington has a very popular department that produces exceptionally high quality work.
